Trouble-Shooting

This where I will be keeping a history of the oddities I come across while servicing our clients.

I cannot count how many times I have had to improvise while troubleshooting problems for our clients.  Even after consulting software and hardware support websites, I have often been unable to find any documented solutions.  That's is when I excel.  If I would have been documenting these solutions for the eighteen years, I would have been able to fill a book with the material.

Problem:  Dell 4500S  running Windows XP Home boots to Blue Screen  of Death:

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

The Dell 4500S had been in sleep mode for one or two days when a power outage occurred.

Ineffective Solution: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545

Even after following the above solution, using saved registry hives for one and two weeks prior, the error still persists. This leads me to believe that some other file(s) must be corrupt and not the registry!

I brought the system back up using the default SOFTWARE hive, unfortunately this meant that non of the loaded software was in the registry.

I did a complete re-install of the O/S, and device drivers.  Also, I reloaded the HP multi-function drivers and software.  I tried the above procedure from Microsoft and the problem still persisted.  I ended up reloading all of the software.

This one has me stumped.  If anyone has any ideas on this one, I would love to hear about it.
